Three teams unbeaten after 2 days of Lion Country Softball

Gilbert, Perry and Buchanan High, Calif., high schools are the lone remaining unbeaten teams after the first two days of pool play in the annual Lion Country Classic Softball Tournament at Red Mountain and Skyline high schools.

Gilbert is 3-0 and has blanked all of its opponents -- Salpointe, Tucson and Queen Creek. Gilbert has one pool play game remaining on Friday at 8 p.m.m against Deer Valley at Skyline HS. Perry (2-0) has knocked off Red Mountain and Highland and plays twice on Friday against Boulder Creek and Mesquite (4 p.m. and 6 p.m.) at Red Mountain. Buchanan (2-0) shutout Mountain Pointe and Highland on Thursday . Buchanan faces Mesa Mtn. View  and Red Mountain on Friday at 4 and 8 p.m., respectively, at Red Mountain HS.

The next best records through Thursday's games are: Mesquite (2-1), Red Mountain (2-1), Basha (2-1), Queen Creek (1-1), Deer Valley (1-1), Desert Ridge (1-1), Salpointe (1-1) and Mesa Mtn. View (1-1).

The 16 teams in the tournament will be seeded 1-16 on a power-point basis after Friday's play. The top 8 compete in Saturday's championship bracket beginning at 9:30 a.m. at  Red Mountain and Skyline. The 9-16 teams play in a consolation bracket at Red Mountain Park beginning at 9:30 a.m.
