Riding a four-match win streak, Corona del Sol’s girls volleyball team was greeted by a warm and lively home crowd that filled the stands.

Corona del Sol girls volleyball team responded by defeating Mesa Desert Ridge in a 6A Central Section match Tuesday. Corona del Sol opened a 17-point lead in Game 1 en route to a 25-8, 25-17, 25-12 victory.

Emma West contributed six kills in the opening set.

Although the Aztecs started off strong, it began to lose its way in the second set, allowing Desert Ridge to catch up.

But Corona del Sol didn’t falter near the end.

“I think our energy could have been a lot better,” Corona del Sol senior middle blocker Lauren Forte said. “We fell apart at the second game, but we picked it back up.”

Seniors Brooke O’Meara, Logan Wallerstedt and Forte excelled Tuesday, tallying multiple kills to help Corona del Sol improve to 31-5 overall to remain in first place in its section with a 6-0 record.

Corona del Sol continued to make some mistakes in the third game but still walked away victorious.

“We have really good chemistry this year,” Forte said. “We have a lot of seniors that are just trying to finish the season off strong.”

With the experience of its eight seniors and six juniors, Corona appears well-prepared for the postseason.

“I’m satisfied with tonight’s win. They passed, set, hit and served well.” Corona del Sol coach Ben Maxfield said.

Corona del Sol will play Gilbert High School Wednesday night at home hoping for another win. “Gilbert is definitely a strong team, and we’re excited about that,” Forte said.
