Baseball

Playing more than one sport is often viewed as a no-no these days to a prep athlete who specializes or excels in one. Not so with Drew Stankiewicz and Nathaniel Causey at Gilbert High.

Saguaro used the return to action of its ace, offensive pressure from the get-go and superior defense to win its 19th consecutive game Thursday in a showdown for first place in the 4A Desert Sky Region. Travis Steinheiser pitched five solid innings and Brandon Demerest, Matt Morris and Ben Tingley cracked long homers as the Sabercats beat host Queen Creek, 12-5.

Mountain Pointe is on pace to break the school record its baseball team set last season for home runs (60). That mark likely will be broken with the Pride resting at 48 homers in 18 games to date. But coach Brandon Buck does not believe home runs define the hitting success the Pride possess. He thinks a game a couple days ago against Marcos de Niza is more telling.

A day after its 14-game home run streak came to an end, Mountain Pointe started another one. After getting shut out for the first three innings on Wedneday afternoon by rival Desert Vista, Mountain Pointe erupted for 16 runs over the final four innings and posted a come-from-behind 16-8 win in a 5A non-region baseball game at Desert Vista.
